Privacy Policy for Trail — Browsing Insights
Last updated: [today’s date]
Trail is a Chrome extension that helps you understand how you spend your time online.
What data Trail collects
Trail records the following information about pages you visit in Chrome:
- The URL and title of the page
- The domain (e.g. example.com)
- When you started and stopped viewing the page
- How long you spent on the page
Where this data is stored
All data is stored locally on your device only, using Chrome’s built-in
chrome.storage.local API. Trail does not transmit, upload, sell, share,
or otherwise send any browsing data anywhere. There is no server, no
analytics, no account system, and no third-party data sharing.
Data you can control
- You can exclude specific domains from tracking in Settings
- You can disable tracking in Incognito mode (off by default)
- You can choose how long data is kept (30 days to 1 year)
- You can export all your data as JSON at any time
- You can clear all data at any time
Permissions Trail requests
- tabs — to detect which tab is active and read its URL/title so Trail can measure time spent
- storage — to save your visit history locally on your device
- idle — to pause the timer when you step away from your computer
Changes to this policy
